Rbk Edge Jersey: New Technology. New Uniform.
The fastest game on earth... just got faster.
The Rbk Edge Jersey is a sleeker, lighter, and more durable design than hockey fans have ever seen before. With
this innovative technology, it enables players to skate faster with a greater range of motion. It also allows players to stay drier and cooler throughout the game as water doesn't soak into the jersey like it has done in the past. These jerseys were first worn during the 2007 NHL All-Star Game and now all 30 NHL teams have switched to them for the 2007-08 season.
The new look marks the biggest uniform makeover in decades. Nearly 2 years after the lockout that remade the NHL's rule book and finances, the league is revamping this uniform. The last change in the way jerseys were made was when teams switched from the old, wool jerseys to the synthetic fabrics in the 1960s. When old players refer to their jerseys as "sweaters", that's really what they were and they soaked up water like a sponge. According the Reebok, the production of these NHL jerseys was a 30 month process with the majority of the time being spent working with nearly all 750 NHL players to design the perfect jersey.
The jersey is no longer just a piece of fabric, in fact, it is full of technology. The patented PlayDry and BeadAway technology is used for moisture management. PlayDry allows for no sweat or heat buildup which keeps players 4 to 10 degrees cooler. The way this technology works is that perspiration comes from the skin but once with hits the PlayDry fabric.... it evaporates. BeadAway similarly but instead of evaporating, the moisture beads off the jersey like rain. It allows provides ventilation to keep players cool.
The new Rbk jerseys also was designed with an anatomical fit in mind. Stretch mesh is used for under the arms and back. This provides a balance of movement and ventilation. The is 4-way stretch component that creates a greater range of motion and freedom of movement (enhanced with BeadAway). The jersey perfectly fits the players' upper body, including the shoulders. The lightweight stretch fabric enhanced with PlayDry provides an overall increase in comfort and temperature control.
The thing thing Reebok looked at is durability. The wanted to manufacture the best possible jersey but they also wanted it to last longer. They have introduced a technology, called X-trafil, to ensure durability. The heavy duty X-trafil, used mostly for the shoulders and elbows, provides durability in the high abrasion areas. The newer, more rugged construction materials double the life-span of the uniforms.
With new technology, there always seems to be some opposition. The main controversy is that traditionalists don't like to change. A lot of people still like the old, bulky traditional sweater. It's the 'If it aint broke, don't fix it' mentality. In fact, these people just see it as another way for Commissioner Gary Bettman and the NHL to increase revenue. Another problem that arose was that these NHL players have grown up wearing the same kind of jerseys and are use to the feel of the old jerseys. Reebok anticipated this problem and worked with nearly every NHL player to personally fit them. Most teams have also practiced with them prior to the start of the season. One final bump in the road is that die-hard fans go out and buy the authentic jersey of their favorite player for big bucks because they want to wear the exact jersey the players' wear. Now these superfans need to turn around an buy another jersey to keep up with the times. A replica jersey costs $115-$130, while the authentic one costs roughly $250. Add at least $50 extra if you want the name on the back.
Despite the opposition, the jerseys are 14% lighter. This is equivalent of more than a 6-ounce puck in weight. Old jerseys absorbed too much moisture from sweat, ice, and water bottles. The new BeadAway technology retains 76% less moisture and the stretch mesh gives players a greater range of motion because the uniforms move with their bodies. With the jerseys ergonomically fitted to the player's body, this generates to 9% less wind drag and leads to faster, "less fatigued" players.
