Nike Logo.jpgImagine winning an Olympic gold medal all because of a little help from Nike. Now you can sink those three point shots all because of a 369g Hyperdunk basketball shoe... or even get that chance to be the first to cross the finish line while saving the environment! Nike's new Swift Suit has been engineered by performance-enhancing technologies to include an aerographics mesh system made from 100% recycled polyester yarns. Go fast, and go green!

As the Bejing Olympics grow closer, companies such as Nike have been continuously working on lighter, faster, and stronger products for competing athletes.

"In designing the uniforms and footwear for the Beijing Olympics, Nike worked closely with the China Olympic Committee, the China Federations and the athletes themselves. In Beijing alone, hundreds of feet were scanned to determine the specific morphology of Chinese feet.

The Nike Sports Research Lab collaborated with research institutions in Beijing and Shanghai to look into the most common injuries in sports. Nike also interviewed the athletes about their likes and dislikes in terms of equipment. Performance-enhancing technologies such as Aerographics, Flywire and Lunarlite foam were integral to the creation of the apparel and footwear for Beijing 2008.

Throughout the four years of development, 22 federations and 54 designers were involved, and a total of 22 uniforms and 32 pairs of footwear were created."

1186508142.jpgI've always been a fan of the EA sports games.  It looks like they've done it again with FIFA 2008.  They just had a tourney in Germany with 32 of the world's best "soccer players"... that is if it counts to play soccer from your couch.

Berlin played host to intense soccer action, as the virtual soccer season came to an explosive end at the FIFA Interactive World Cup (FIWC) Final at the Sony Centre on Saturday. Thirty-two of the world's best interactive soccer players met face to face to compete for the ultimate title of FIFA Interactive World Player 2008. Following an incredible display of tactics and skill on EA SPORTS™ FIFA Soccer 08 on PLAYSTATION®3, Alfonso Ramos beat Michael Ribeiro from New Jersey 3-1 in front of a cheering crowd, securing the title and the $20,000 US prize money. Ramos also received an invitation to attend the FIFA World Player Gala in Zurich on January 12, 2009 where he will rub shoulders with real life soccer heroes. A fantastic day of soccer culminated in the two best players facing off for what turned out to be a nail biting final full of world class skill and great emotion. The game got off to an electric start as Ramos' Barcelona side took the lead with a beautiful header and he solidified his dominance with a decisive finish early in the second half. Ribeiro, also playing as Barcelona, responded emphatically with a classy goal to bring the score back to 2-1, but Ramos showed his determination and with less than ten minutes to go, restored his 2-goal lead. Ribeiro came back strongly but in the end Ramos' defense proved too strong and the game finished 3-1. The third and fourth playoff was contested between Brazil's Andre Casagrande Buffo and Austria's Dominik Posch. In a closely fought encounter, the Austrian came out on top with a 2-1 victory. "I came here to do my best but really didn't believe I would make it this far. It's been an absolutely fantastic day - to test myself against the world's best virtual soccer gamers is what this tournament is all about," said Alfonso Ramos." I'm really proud to be the first Spaniard to be crowned FIFA Interactive World Player and look forward to defending my title next year."

LZR Racer

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Speedo has continued its line of aquatic racing suits with the brand new LZR Racer that has recently been worn during many world record swims. This new technology has allowed swimmers to have less resistance drag in the water as well as better core stability, which allows the swimmers to be more efficient in the water. There is, however, some controversy surrounding the suit in two ways. First of all, FINA has cleared the suit yet people still believe that Speedo has gone to far in giving an advantage to the swimmers. Secondly, not everyone has been given access to the suit or been able to afford it. This swimwear technology will surely continue over the next few years as Speedo will continue to look at new innovations towards not only the Bejing 2008 Olypmics, but the games following it as well.

A coaches job is slowly getting easier and more specified with 'The Digital Coaches Assistant.'  This software contains hundreds of pre-programmed plays on a computer that instantly gives each player their position, assignment and a visual of how the play will unfold.  The software is designed to work for Basketball, Football, Canadian Football, Hockey, Rugby, Women and Men's Lacrosse, Volleyball, Soccer and Field Hockey. All the players - offence and defence - are represented. When activated, the program shows each player, the offensive or defensive play required and the eventual outcome in an animated flow.  Players can be moved around the screen by clicking and dragging them to the desired location. A travel route line is automatically created on screen. From there, the coach need only double click on another player's number and the ball or puck will be passed to them. The program allows for an infinite number of passes and player movements. When the ball or puck is passed, the program leaves a broken-line trail of its travel.  Digital Coaches Asistant is part of Crosstrainer fitness software.  This could be a revolutionary change to the game of sports.

A New Technology that has been introduced and has revolutionized the golf equipment industry is the Iron Byron. The machine is used by the United States Golf Association and top industry premier manufactures to design and test club designs to bring the best product to you the consumer.

The Iron Byron is actually named after the most consistent player in history, the Great Byron Nelson. Legend had it that Byron's swing was so consistent and perfect that only a machine could be as accurate shot per shot. Although this is a bit of a exaggeration the real man was perhaps the greatest in consistency. The Machine Iron Byron can swing a documented ten thousand times. It is said that they have to replace the centerline turf every few months as the balls hitting the same spot thousands of times wears it out.

Iron Byron is not an anthropod meaning it isn't a human shaped machine. Although it is a design is based on three basic movements that mirror that of the golf swing. The movements are Rotation, Angle, and Hinge. The swivel is built on a base that is a floor mounted pedestal 4-5 feet tall with a pivot at the top of the triangle. The Angle is translated by the positing of the club in relation to the ground up. The Hinge is part of the machine that simulates the wrists. All of these parts are used to articulate and mimic the dimensions and motion of a human swing.

This information technology tool really has brought about the dramatic changes we see today in the golf club industry. This change really has pushed the limits and from finding the results with such consistency club manufactures are able to regulate and produce the best product possible for us the end users.

Radar Golf

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Radar Golf has revolutionized the way the game of golf is played today. This technology will prevent so many headaches, lower your score, and speed up play. How can you go wrong with Radar Golf?

radar golf.jpgRadar Golf uses a Ball Positioning System technology, which consists of three main components: the handheld, Shield-It pouch and ball. BPS technology uses advanced electronics to enable the handheld to transmit a specific radio frequency signal. When this signal reaches a Radar Golf ball, the ball returns a separate specific RF signal. The handheld receiver is tuned to "listen" for the signal from the ball. An LCD provides visual feedback and an audio tone allows you to hone in on your lost ball. You will receive stronger feedback as you get closer to your ball.

If you are wondering about how the Radar golf ball is affected by the microchip, or if it has any other problems, you have nothing to worry about. The ball is USGA conforming and meets all USGA specifications for size, weight, distance, initial velocity and symmetry. The embedded microchip is so small that it does not affect the performance of the ball in any way. The chip has no power source and will last as long as the ball.

The Radar Golf package has an overall price of $199.95. The Radar Golf Handheld is roughly $130. Included in the package is also one dozon Radar Golf balls, which cost $39.95. The protective carrying case for the handheld costs $14.95. A Shield-It pouch set is included, which also costs $14.95. Finally, an owner's manual and DVD are included to help in operating the device, as well as six AAA batteries.

SportsNet New York is overhauling its SNY.tv Web site with a slate of independent blogs and exclusive broadband shows.  The new site, which also will feature a redesign, plans to relaunch March 31, in time for Opening Day.  RSNs typically have lagged behind other sports networks in terms of rolling out broadband services for their Web sites. This year, though, each of the four New York area RSNs will have extensive broadband components to their sites.  SNY.tv's relaunch will incorporate more than just broadband video. SNY started its strategy last year by acquiring and partnering with four blogs, which has helped SNY.tv log a 300 percent increase in unique users since December. It bought metsblog.com and waswatching.com (a Yankees blog) and partnered with jetsblog.com. The site launched its own Giants blog, giantsfootballblog.com, after it could not find a Giants blog to partner with.  SNY.tv also is planning to roll out up to four broadband programs specific to the site. It is planning a midday news-and-entertainment show and a daily show centered on its Mets and Yankees blogs. It also plans stand-alone Mets postgame shows.  The site does not plan to repurpose content from the TV channel, though it will feature video highlights from Mets games. It has hired six employees for its digital operations, including a producer and a video editor. The site plans to feature more interactive elements around its live Mets Mets games, including polling and text messaging services. It is also about to sign a deal with Stats Inc. for access to up-to-the-minute scores and stats.

Today, 3D high definition technology is being used in sports.

The NBA launched its first 3D HD offering last year during an invitation-only event at the All Star Game in LasVegas. Moreover, in the 2007 NBA Finals, about 14,000 people watched the game in 3D HD at Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena.

Fans will be able to watch more exciting games at home. Team owners also will be able to offer stadiumlike ticket prices to fans who want to watch a game in theatres.

However, the number of total attendance in stadiums might be decreasing because more people will watch a game at home or theatres. Therefore, sports franchises need to assess whether the 3D HD technology brings benefits to them or not Picture1.jpg in the future.

DirecTV provides multiple sports packages for fans to choose from, including NFL Sunday Ticket, MLB Extra Innings, NASCAR Hot Pass, NCAA Mega March Madness, and the brand new, Masters Experience.

The most popular of the packages, NFL Sunday Ticket, offers a Superfan option, which gives fans even more control.  This package includes the ability to watch 8 games at once and the option to choose the audio from any of the current games.  All of these games are available in HD and with the press of a button, allow the user to check fantasy updates and scores, without missing second of game action.

One of the other wildly popular packages is NCAA Mega March Madness.  Now offering the first four rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, this package, like Sunday Ticket and MLB Extra Innings, shows multiple games on one screen and the option to choose the audio.  Furthermore, fans can fill out interactive brackets, and see live score updates right on the screen.

This past April, the Masters Experience was introduced.  Like its other packages, DirecTV has a channel offering 4 different ways to view the golf event.  You can watch the CBS feed, the day's highlights, Amen Corner, or holes 15 and 16.  Along with interactive options like leaderboards and trivia, the Masters Experience will become another cornerstone in the DirecTV Sports lineup.

Riddell.jpg

Over four years of research and development has brought about a revolutionary change in the way football helmets are constructed. The reason behind this research and development is further concussion prevention. The problem associated with this research is that previously, it was believed that concussions were caused by impacts to the front or top of the head. Based on recent findings, concussions are caused by impacts to the side of the head, not the top or front as believed previously. From this new information, Riddell, the official helmet of the NFL, is taking an innovative approach to help prevent footballs most dangerous injury.

The RevolutionT is first of its kind technology built to reduce the risk of concussions. Computer designed, this is the first structural change to a helmet in over 25 years. CEO of Riddell, Bill Sherman says "We turned science to design our new Revolution helmet, which took more than four years to develop and produce. It represents the next generation of football helmets - a sleek-looking design built to protect the mind. NFL trainers, equipment managers, coaches, and player are all talking about it, but we're really excited about the opportunity to offer this new helmet to players from the college ranks down." Riddell is excited about its new product and wants to spread not only throughout the NFL but to amateurs as well like NCAA football and even high school football.

This new helmet uses innovative features specifically designed to prevent concussions. The Tru-CurveT is a protective shell that extends to the jaw area and is computer designed around the head's center of gravity to offer great front to back stability. The Z-pad provides protection to the side of the jaw and head which decreases the impact on these areas if a collision occurs. The VSR Air-FitTsystem is a padding that can inflate to customize a player's helmet to the exact size of his head.

Implementing the Revolution, Riddell has increased the distance from the helmet shell to the player's head, allowing players to deal with potential concussion causing hits. This technology should prevent concussions and keep players on the field. They should no longer have to worry about the high risk of a concussion.

SlingBox

When you're on a business trip or stuck in a three hour lecture during your favorite teams gametime, it is a necessity to have a subscription to SlingBox.  This unique and newly development of technology is an internet connection that connects to a TV source via a cable chord to an existing internet connection.  The connection will work on any Windows, Apple computers, and most mobile devices.  Any device that you use with SlingBox is used with an onscreen virtual remote to control all of your commands.  It is very easy to use to make your viewing experience most pleasurable.

There are three types of the SlingBox; SlingBox AV, SlingBox SOLO, and the SlingBox PRO. The Slingbox AV is the most standard of all of them.  It connects one standard definition device such as your DVR or digital cable.  The price began around $129.99, but has slowly declined due to the enhancements in other Slingbox versions.  The Slingbox SOLO has the same features as the AV, but this one allows you to view your T.V. content in HD.  This version runs around $179.99. With a great high quality viewing experience, the SOLO is a big hit.  The final version is the PRO.  The PRO includes all of the features of the AV and SOLO, but allows you to connect up to four video sources, including one HD source.  The PRO is the most versitile in means of bringing your home television anywhere you go.  You can use your laptop or mobile device to watch anything you would be watching on the couch.  This is the most expensive the three but definately worth every penny.  It runs around $229.99.  How could you give up the chance to not miss a single game?

The NHL and the NFL have recently teamed up with Slingbox in their new campaigns.  In June, 2007 the NHL was the first major league sport to partner with Sling Media.  They signed an agreement where technology would enable all current and future Slingbox members to clip and share live or recorded segments of NHL programming.  The NHL used this partnership as a way to embrace new technologies to help grow their fan base.  Not long after the NFL neared a deal to join the NHL in a partnership with Sling Media.  It was set to release at the beginning of the 2007 NFL season.  You would be able to search old and new clips while creating your own personal highlight reel of any team.  These two leagues have opened it up to all the other major league sports out there to broaden their technologies and reach out to many more fans.

group.jpgTechnology is growing more rapidly each year.  Sports and marketing is my interest and technology can be my portal.  Technology is really amazing, and what it can do for sports.  If it's watching your favorite sports team on a high definition television, getting the scores and updates on your cell phone, or using the internet to find and learn more about your team, to name a few examples, technology is great.  Since sports and marketing is something that really interests me, I love to learn more about each subject.  A few weeks ago I was on facebook.com and received an invitation to join a group.  This group was called "2K Sports Hit-N-Run Tour."

A marketing company was using technology to promote a brand new sports video game called "Major League Baseball 2K8", and a tour that will be promoting the game even more, at college campuses around the country.   If you join, every time you visit the group you have a chance to win a free game.  This group offers discounts on the game, trailers of "Major League Baseball 2K8", and dates and locations of the colleges where a tour bus will come so anyone can use the video game stations on the bus, to play the game before they purchase it.  I think this idea to market the game was excellent.  As technology grows there will be more ways to intertwine sports & technology.  I just hope one day I can run with an idea for marketing sports using technology in a way that has never been done.

iGolf Systems

igolf.jpgAs the temperature rises, so does the frustration of amateur golfers like me. Countless peaceful summer days are quickly turned into stressful fits of rage when I hit the links. In the past, struggling golfers would either have to pay for costly caddies or just continue to live in the hazards. However, several companies have recently designed handheld devices that provide all the qualities of a real life caddie, without putting a big dent on our wallets. iGolf Systems has introduced a product that puts them ahead of their competitors.

Weighing only 6 ounces, iGolf gps devices can store information on as many as 40 different courses. The course specifications can be downloaded directly from iGolf.com for free, with purchase of a gps system. Compared to other similar products, iGolf is relatively affordable at $229.00. For iGolf systems, low price does not equal low quality. Golfing Magazine, recently voted iGolf the #1 golf gps device. Go Magazine also hailed the product as one of 2007's "20 coolest gizmos."

Hawkeye Innovations has been the leader in sport technology since 2001. What began as a as a tool to help fans enjoy a cricket game is now used to help officiate many sports including tennis, soccer and even helping out coaches. It is most notably used to see if the ball is on the line or not in a tennis match. This technology helps determine winners and losers while showing where the ball lands within 3.6 millimeters. It works by taking different camera angles of the ball and court and then turning it into a 3D image onto a computer. From there it takes into consideration the trajectory, bounce and compression in comparison to the line. The competitor will only be able to use this twice per set. Obviously it will both help and hurt different players. When it was first used Roger Federer asked to turn the system off because he had a call turned against him. This could be used in cricket just like in baseball as a pitch tracker and the speed of the ball. In snookers it is used for a "players view" of the shot as well as the potential position of the following shot. It will be used in soccer to determine where the ball goes out of bounds either being a corner kick or a goal kick. This technology is basically a much more sophisticated version of Dartfish. The possibility of this technology is endless and is still continuing to grow. It will be interesting to see what other sports are impacted by this technology.

There is no question that Video on Demand (VOD) is a growing technology.  Maybe you used it to see that series finale of the Sopranos you missed or to watch a movie on one of those lonely Saturday evenings.  Whatever you may have used it for, the bottom line is that its applications are still being tested and its potential has certainly not been realized.  The sports industry, specifically sports media companies have recently found new and interesting ways to use VOD.  CBS.com for example, used VOD technology to broadcast all of the NCAA tournament games on their website.  Anyone, from the guy who religiously follows his bracket to the bored executive in his cubicle could watch any of the tournament games for free on their computer.  What did this mean?  For the first round alone the website received 1,751,956 unique visitors, which was 122% increase over the first round the previous year (2007).  For those Detroit Tiger fans living somewhere else in the U.S, MLB.com is offering their version of VOD as well.  Unlike NCAA on Demand, MLB on Demand requires a payment and subscription of its users.  It offers high quality video of all MLB games and up to date statistics of all players.

What does this mean for the industry?  Who really knows right now?  What we do know is that with television and internet convergence on the horizon it's only a matter of time before VOD becomes mainstream.  Advertisers are going to start looking for more new and creative ways to get their messages across and an interactive model like VOD could very well be the next step.  This means more money.  And let's be honest... who doesn't want more of that?

With the changing time in the sporting industry, many new technologies have been introduced to perfect the outcome of the game. This holds true in soccer as well. Adidas along with Cairos Technologies have teamed up to create a game ball made with sensors which determine when exactly the ball crossed the goal line in an event of a goal. This technology is intended to help referees make quick decisions that will impact the outcome of the game. As the ball rolls across the goal line, the referee, who is equipped with an earpiece or watch, will hear a beep or see "goal" on his/her watch. This technology will provide instant feedback on any play that is in question of being a goal. The Adidas Intelligent Ball is being implemented all over the world. It was not available for the 2006 FIFA World Cup due to imperfections in the technology. We hope to see this technology implemented soon to help perfect the world's most beloved game. adidas intelligent ball.jpg

The hot topic of discussion among die-hard NASCAR fans and the drivers on both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup circuits has been the "Car of Tomorrow".
For those that are not familiar with this new stock car design it is not just appealing to look at but considered the most significant upgrade in driver safety NASCAR has ever seen.
COT.jpg            Larger crumple zones have been built on each side, exhaust exits on the right side of the car to divert heat away from the driver, driver's seat and roll cage have been shifted as well as a stronger and smaller fuel cell.
Although several drivers have expressed their concerns with the COT and the adjustments they have had to make it definitely isn't going anywhere.  Just ask rookie driver Mike Mcdowell.

Online Gaming

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Online gaming is a technology rather than a genre; a mechanism for connecting players together rather than a particular pattern of game play. "Online games are played over some form of computer network, now typically on the internet. One advantage of online games is the ability to connect to multiplayer game, although single player online games are quite common as well.   44% of households play online games, 58% of males play online, 42% of females play online, and very addictive.

Types of Online Sporting Games available online are Madden 08, NBA Live 08, NCAA 08, FIFA Soccer 08, Tiger Woods PGA 08, NASCAR 09, and many more.  How do you get started? First, you have to Purchase an X Box 360 or Play station 3 consoles.  Next, you connect to a broadband internet connection.  Then, you create a gamer profile, and last but not least you play.

What is online?  There is regular game play, online tournaments, chartrooms, private chat with head sets, and mini games available.  Also, you can get live updates and roster updates.

The online gaming market is competitive.   Xbox live generally cost about $20 for three months and about $50 for a year, however, Play station 3 online is free.  They offer some online updates for money but most are generally free. And they tend to focus on the age groups of 12- 30 years old.

citi field.jpg        Two recently significant dates in the history of the New York Mets are:  On April 6, 2006, the Mets presented plans for their new, open-air ballpark to be built in the parking lot next to Shea Stadium. Several features, including a rotunda at the entrance, evoke memories of Ebbets Field. This was the intention of Mets owner Fred Wilpon, who was raised in Brooklyn when the Dodgers played there. The park features irregular outfield fences, elaborate steel bridgework and a cantilevered deck in right field.  The total project costs are estimated around $600 million.  Another important date in the construction of Citi Field is, on November 13, 2006, the Mets broke ground on their new ballpark and announced it would be called Citi Field. A naming rights deal with Citigroup will pay the Mets in excess of $20 million annually for 20 years.

Some interesting facts about the park that makes it unique are the dimensions.  To start Left field is 335 feet; left-center: 379 feet; center field: 408 feet; right-center: 391 feet; right field: 330 feet.  This tells only half the story becuase the right field line is unlike any other with seats that reach over 8 feet into fair territory.  Every seat in the park is angled so that it gives a feel that you are closer than ever to the game.  Some other facts are wider seats and more legroom between rows.  That is good and bad becuase it was always really cramped from seat to seat in Shea Stadium but that takes away from attendance with Citi Field only holding 45,000.  Finally, a very key fact is that the subway ramp which connects the subway platform to the ballpark plaza will be maintained.  That is important becuase that keeps the revenue for the subway system constant and it also allows for maximum capacity for any particular game or event being held that night.

If you have any questions about the new technology company knowsn as QuesTec that has been hired by Major League Baseball to monitor umpire performance, this article is for you.
    According to QuesTec.com,
"QuesTec is the global leader in today's climate of converging digital media, creating computer-generated, real-time virtual replays and in-game digital analysis content for professional sporting events covered on TV and the Internet."
Their most well known product is the one being used by MLB, it is called Umpire Information System.
Four cameras are used, two at field level, one above the 3rd baseline and one above the 1st baseline. The four cameras record each pitch by tracking the speed, curvature and placement of the ball.
Each pitch can be located in reference to what MLB designates to be the correct strike zone (the strike zone changes based on the batters measurements). Umpires and MLB officials then review the film and can analyze uis.jpgand learn from the data.
In order for MLB to judge the effectiveness of the UIS system, cameras have been placed in some but not all ballparks. The ballparks with the UIS system are: Angel Stadium (Anaheim), Chase Field (Arizona), Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, Jacobs Field (Cleveland), McAfee Stadium (Oakland), Miller Park (Mailwaukee), Minute Maid Park (Houston), Shea Stadium, Tropicana Field (Tampa Bay) and U.C. Cellular Field (Chicago).
When the UIS system was first implemented into MLB, many felt that it would "ruin the game"Despite the critics, statistics show that hitting and pitching has either remained steady or improved in ballparks containing QuesTec cameras.
The goal of instilling consistency into the strike zone is being reached.
