For the Yankees organization, there are several things this year that must really bend the bars of the house the Ruth built. Sure, the embarrassment of failing to make the playoffs in the first time in 12 years was bad. The sting of the Tampa Bay Rays (yes awful attempt at a pun) making their first World Series appearance while harpooning the AL east that has dominated them since existence. No, no but by losing in the final resting place of the monumental stadium must really peeve the principle owners of H&H Steinbrenner Inc. For the Yankees, the coal is growing for the players, no championship in nearly a decade, a payroll that countries would desire to have and yet the Yankees seem to be searching for a new player to substitute each week. But, Ol' saint Brian can cross this present off your list Yankee fans. How about a nice big box of CC? CC? As in Cash and Credit Sabathia? You guessed it right you now corporate-owned Bleacher Creatures. How does the Cashman fit so much in that such a small bag? Oh that's right, I forgot those 100 luxury boxes and $500 box seats on the field. But is the Cashmans bag empty yet? No, no how can it be? There is still lots to go around, Burnetts are still on the shelves as well as Derek Lowe, Mark Texieira, Ben Sheets and well basically who else does not have a job by your holiday season.
Lets switch boroughs for a sleigh ride minute. How can you not feel for the Wilpons in their situation? A heartbroken organization that left their loyal fans "left at the alter" of the doorstep of championship number three. Face facts, Omar has been trying to destroy his bullpen since May. As of this week, Omar essentially took the wrecking ball currently tearing down Shea Stadium and absolutely DESTROYED it. But Ho,Ho,Ho Mets fans, we know you've been good this off-season. Because Omar Claus, used his big red bag of money to once again sign, seal and deliver a wonderful present for the orange and blue. A nice big K-Rod with batteries included of course. Although, Francisco did not receive his gift of five years 75 million dollars, he should take credit to know that his good deeds in Anaheim will certainly payoff in hopes of helping the Mets win another championship at
....Breathe deep, Mets fans, we'll all be pen pals for the next several years.
Baseball back to the Olympics for the 2016 games? A group led by Harvey Schiller, who is the international Baseball Federation president will go to Lausanne, Switzerland to appeal to the IOC. In the group there will also be the Bob Dupuy MLB president and the Detroit Tigers outfielder Curtis Granderson.
I am all for getting baseball back into the Olympics. The concensus argument seems to be that no big name MLB players play in the games. But I don't think that it should matter because the Olympics shouldn't be about revenue it should be about countries team's getting together to see which country has the best team. It seems as though baseball was taken out of the Olympics because no big name MLB players were on any teams, which would create a lot of revenue from people coming to watch them play. The World Baseball classic has managed to make it so that major players can play, why can't the Olympics?
After about four years of wheeling and dealing, national sales manager for Feld Entertainment Motor Sports, David Thompson has come to an agreement with Jägermeister. For a one year deal Jägermeister will be the official spirit of Monster Energy AMA Supercross. The Sports Business Journal is reporting that the BCS is searching for a 60 percent increase in price for the rights to its four bowl games. BCS officials have entered into negotiations with Fox who currently has rights to the four championship games. According to the journal, Fox would have to pay $800 million dollars over a six year contract, or approximately $132 million dollars a year. This is a huge amount of money for Fox to pay especially during this economic time. Fox executives were not expecting such a dramatic increase in the price for the rights to the games, so there is going to be a lot of negotiation going on.
The BCS is supposedly doing this in order to open up the rights for the championship games to other networks such as ABC/ESPN. If ABC/ESPN were to outbid fox and obtain the television rights to the games, they would have a stronghold on all of college football. This will also give them the chance to move the games to their cable network ESPN which could in fact limit the number of viewers. That is something that the BCS executives are going to have to look at carefully because after all they want everyone to be able to view the game. At any rate, this story will be interesting to see how it all turns out and see if Fox is willing to drop a huge amount of money for four college football games. And if not, then see who is willing to match the asking price from the BCS. Just another reason in my opinion to move to a playoff style in college football.
