Nike Logo.jpgImagine winning an Olympic gold medal all because of a little help from Nike. Now you can sink those three point shots all because of a 369g Hyperdunk basketball shoe... or even get that chance to be the first to cross the finish line while saving the environment! Nike's new Swift Suit has been engineered by performance-enhancing technologies to include an aerographics mesh system made from 100% recycled polyester yarns. Go fast, and go green!

As the Bejing Olympics grow closer, companies such as Nike have been continuously working on lighter, faster, and stronger products for competing athletes.

"In designing the uniforms and footwear for the Beijing Olympics, Nike worked closely with the China Olympic Committee, the China Federations and the athletes themselves. In Beijing alone, hundreds of feet were scanned to determine the specific morphology of Chinese feet.

The Nike Sports Research Lab collaborated with research institutions in Beijing and Shanghai to look into the most common injuries in sports. Nike also interviewed the athletes about their likes and dislikes in terms of equipment. Performance-enhancing technologies such as Aerographics, Flywire and Lunarlite foam were integral to the creation of the apparel and footwear for Beijing 2008.

Throughout the four years of development, 22 federations and 54 designers were involved, and a total of 22 uniforms and 32 pairs of footwear were created."

may.jpgIn Las Vegas, one of the biggest boxing matches in history took place on December 8, 2007.  Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Ricky Hatton.  Through all the hype by the media Mayweather was able to pull through with yet another win in the 10th round with a technical knockout.  Mayweather is now 39-0 with 25 knockouts.  Even with a previously injured right had, Mayweather showed no weakness.

While boxing is not one of the most popular sports in society today fights that surround Mayweather cause a fan frenzy.  With the media's help to build up Mayweather and make him seem unbeatable, each time he fights there is more hype surrounding the fight.  Who will be the first to stop the undefeated Mayweather?  The fans who attended the match reached 30,000 while those not at the match were forced to buy the fight on pay-per view.

LAS VEGAS -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. boxed the heart out of Ricky Hatton on Saturday night, repeatedly pounding the gutty Englishman on his way to a 10th-round technical knockout that confirmed the flashy welterweight champion as his sport's most skilled tactician.

Mayweather (39-0, 25 knockouts) completed a night-long destruction of Hatton in the 10th by first sending him crashing downward into a corner post pad. Later, Mayweather ended his punching artistry with another left hook and an overhead right.

Hatton staggered slowly backward, then fell on his back, as referee Joe Cortez waved off the fight between the two unbeatens.

On Friday night, on pay-per-view, two boxers who genuinely dislike each other met in what boxing experts agree

box_a_vargas_412.jpgwas another solid action packed fight that did live up to the hype.  Though there was one belt on the line, the Super Middleweight bout between Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga certainly meant a great deal to each boxer for pride in itself.  Leading up to the fight, both fighters did a lot of trash talking and even broke out into a fist fight on July 11 at the first pre-fight news conference.  Thankfully for boxing fans, the punches were not reserved only for the news conference, and both fighters were active in what was eventually a 12 round decision for Ricardo Mayorga.  For Mayorga, this means he will likely still have drawing power as an action packed fighter, and for Fernando Vargas it means he will have lost his final fight, assuming he keeps his word on retiring.  In what has been shaping up to be a very solid conclusion to 2007 for the world of boxing, chalk this fight up as yet another victory for boxing.  To read more about the Vargas/Mayorga fight read on here...

On Saturday night HBO Boxing showed a pay-per-view boxing event that featured Sugar Shane Mosley vs Miguel

box_g_casamayor_200.jpgCotto in what was a largely hyped fight that for the most part according to boxing experts lived up to the hype.  On a night that boxing should have been thrilled to have it's main event live up to the hype, it instead unfortunately illustrated yet again how poor scoring by ringside judges can often leave a bad taste in the mouths of boxing fans.  In a lightweight title fight on the Cotto-Mosley undercard Joel Casamayor defended his title against challenger Santa Cruz.  In a match that challenger Santa Cruz dominated throughout, forcing Casamayor backwards, and even knocking him down once in the first round, judges ruled the fight a win for Casamayor in a split decision.  Unofficial scorers from ESPN and Harold Lederman from HBO had the fight a 119-108 and 118-109 victory respectively for Santa Cruz.  Boxing is now faced with a challenge of what to do, most likely they will force the judges to explain their scorecards, and take it from there.  Unfortunately for Santa Cruz, that does little to correct the injustice he faced that evening.  To read more as well as results of other recent boxing matches check out this article by ESPN author Dan Rafael.

On Saturday November 3 Joe Calzaghe and Mikkel Kessler will be meeting to unify the Super Middleweight titles.

box_g_calzaghe_412.jpgFor boxing, this is yet another opportunity to stir interest and re-capture fans that may be jumping ship to MMA.  Boxing experts, such as Bert Sugar, believe the fight has an opportunity to be fight of the year.  HBO is opting to show the fight live at 9 PM EST on there regular HBO station as opposed to on PPV.  By not showing the fight on PPV, HBO has an opportunity to gain a larger audience and advertise their PPV featuring Shane Mosley and Miguel Cotto.  For Bert Sugar's take, check out this video on ESPN.

Saturday night boxing legend Evander Holyfield challenged Sultan Ibragimov in a Heavyweight Championship title box_g_ibragimov_412.jpgmatch.  Holyfield lost unanimously and by a wide margin on all three score cards.  Holyfield is a four-time former Heavyweight Champion, however, he is 44 years old and turns 45 on Friday.  Many boxing experts and trainers, including Freddie Roach and Jeff Mayweather, suggest that it is time for Evander Holyfield to retire.  Though trainers suggest he retire, Holyfield said after the fight that he intends to continue fighting and hopes to unify Heavyweight title belts and retire a champion.  http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3063633

In a time when Mixed Martial Arts is gaining mainstream media attention and boxing is losing a lot of its luster, can Saturday September 29th Middleweight Championship upset help revive boxing?  By itself, probably not, but boxing has a full plate of marquee matchups remaining for the rest of 2007, and this fight was the perfect opener.  Kelly Pavlik, a 25 year old 31-0 knockout puncher from Youngstown, Ohio, beat Jermaine Taylor, who was the undisputed Middleweight champion and also undefeated with a draw against Ronald "Winkey" Wright on his resume, by KO in round 7.  Boxing analysts for HBO billed it one of the best Middleweight title fights ever.  Though that may be debatable, what isn't, is that boxing fans in Atlantic City, and many watching at home enjoyed the action packed fight.  What remains to be seen is if boxing can build off of this matchup with the long list of other premiere matchups involving fighters at the top of their respective weight classes.  Tim Sturby, writer for ESPN.com writes and excellent article about the exciting fights coming up this fall which can be found at the link below.
