Temperature Management System

|

Thumbnail image for texans.jpgThe Temperature Management System (TMS) is a new technology for cooling football players. TMS uses compressors to blow cold, dry air through the shoulder pads of players.

This technology was developed at the University of Florida in the early 2000's. The Temperature Management System debuted in 2004 at a Clemson vs. Wake Forest football game. The technology soon spread to the NFL.

TMS was tested by five NFL teams during the 2005 season. The Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys all took part in the test. The Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts still use TMS today. Along with the Cowboys and Colts, the Miami Dolphins, St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals also take advantage of the Temperature Management System.

Safety is a major benefit associated with the Temperature Management System. By utilizing this technology there is much less risk of heat related injuries. Being able to cool down players safetly and quickly also provides performance advantages, since a rise in body temperature is associated with a decrease in athletic performance.

New technologies, like the Temperature Management System, are leading the way for increased safety and player performance in the NFL.

Panoramic Stadium Views

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Panoramic stadium views are becoming a big thing in sports today. Some people do not have time to go down to the stadium and pick out season seats so this software can help that situation. Going online to look at the available seats at the stadium is a great iuva.jpgdea. They can see the view from their new seats but one problem is there can not see if their view will be obstructed by poles or players. I think that this is a very good tool for busy people or people who may not be close to the stadium to go and take a look themselves. It can be a quick process if you have a computer handy and know where you think you would like to sit. If I was getting season tickets I would defiantly want my team to have this software so I didn't have to make a trip to the stadium. You can also buy parking with this software which is also a convenience.

Giants end Purress Season

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

The previous friday in a New York night club, Plaxico Burress shot himself on accident in the leg with a gun. Then giants put their star wide reciever who led them to a superbowl win on the reserve non-football injury list for conduct detrimental to the team, this also means he wont be back for the playoffs or the superbowl. This is a huge blow to the team, althought they still have been winning without him, and they proved last year they can win without a star missing in the lineup (shockey).

I feel that this action that was done by the Giants was alittle over the top. The Giants are known for not dealing with these type of tactics, but this is a player who has won them a superbowl and has them at a record of 11-1 right now. Hopefully things can be worked out during the offseason and Burress will be back next year.

The Best Seat in the House

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)
Suites are becoming the most important seats in stadiums in the past few years.  Many new stadiums are being built just for the expensive seats.  New stadiums make more money from the suites than from normal seats. NFL games are becoming a social event more than a football game.  People try to get to seats in the suites and owners boxes. Being in the owners box at a NFL game is one of the best things for a businessman. It may prove to colleagues that they are important. Celebrities, Politicians, Athletes, and Businessmen are invited by NFL owners to watch the game with them.

These seats are some of the

most important seats in sports. In the article below Bruce Schoenfeld describes different owners boxes through sports and who they invite to games. And how they use this important suite to their advantage. If the owner is close to finishing a business deal they may invite the partner to a game to try to get the other businessman to finish the deal. These seats are a huge deal in sports.

$65,100 For a Seat???

| | Comments (3) | TrackBacks (0)
TRANSITPLAZA.jpgThe New York Jets are opening up a new stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey in 2010. This new stadium will be shared with the New York Giants. This Billion dollar stadium will follow the current trend of having Public Seat Licenses (PSL) sold. These licenses give the holder the right to that specific seat for a given amount of time. Instead of the normal $50-100 ticket, people will now have to pay thousands just to get the right to buy a ticket to the event. Some PSL's at the new Meadowlands Stadium are going up for auction, at over $65,000. This is not even the tickets. Just the seat, you still have to pay to get into the event. This is ridiculous for the normal fan, they can't afford to pay for a seat and the ticket. The only fans that can afford this are the rich business people that have unlimited amounts of money. However all the teams want is $$$$$$. They will pay for the stadium with these licenses and they won't have to rely on taxpayers dollars.

Buffalo Bills Moving?

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
According to Forbes Magazine the Buffalo Bills are one of the "10 Sports Franchises Most Likely to Move". Other  genthumb.ashx.jpgteams on the list include the Tampa Bay Rays, Florida Marlins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Islanders, and New Orleans Hornets. The article cites reasons for relocation as money issues, small market size and old stadiums. Buffalo, NY is a very small city compared to other American and Canadian cities without a NFL team. Los Angeles, CA and Toronto, Ontario are two cities vying for a team. Sure, the Bills sell out every game but their revenue comes from more than just ticket sales. TV revenue, merchandise, and ticket sales all come into affect. Buffalo is so small compared to Toronto they can't make as much money in Western New York.

Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, my hometown, is over 30 years old. It has been used by the Bills since it was built in 1972. It may be old but it has the atmosphere that no new stadium could match. When you go to a Bills game in Orchard Park, it is an all day party. You get up at 8 a.m. and go tailgate for four hours before the game at 1 p.m.. Once you get in the stadium it is a atmosphere like no other. You feel the excitement in the air for the kickoff and hopefully a Bills win. This atmosphere could not be matched in a new stadium built in Buffalo, or the rumored relocation spot of Toronto, Ontario.

Toronto may only be one and a half hours from Buffalo, but the Bills belong in Buffalo. Tailgating would be non-existent in Toronto due to Ontario's laws regarding open alcoholic beverages. The stadium would also be filled with business people who are at the game for a social event, not the football game, as shown in the Bills games in Toronto now. The Bills are playing eight games in Toronto over a five season span in hopes that the Bills will gain more fans in Southern Ontario. In return the Bills are getting $78 million from Ted Rogers. Rogers owns the Toronto Blue Jays and Rogers Centre, where the games are to be played. Ticket prices for this event are ridiculous. The cheapest seats are around $100, at Ralph Wilson Stadium you can get a seat for as low as $30. The only people that can afford this are the rich, upper class Toronto natives. A normal blue-collar Buffalonian will not be able to attend this game. Therefore the atmosphere, and home field advantage will not be as great as in Orchard Park. The Bills belong in Buffalo and hopefully a new owner steps up and keeps them there once current owner Ralph Wilson Jr. passes on.

roy williams 2.jpg Tuesday, October 14, was the final day trades could be made in the NFL.  The trade deadline is now in effect.  Deep-pocketed Dallas Cowboys GM, Jerry Jones made a blockbuster move before the deadline. The Cowboys traded a first-round pick in 2009 and a third and sixth-round pick in 2010 to the Detroit Lions for premier WR Roy Williams. However, the deal is not yet complete. The Cowboys are looking to lock Williams up with a long term contract, potentially a 5-year deal.

Roy Williams is at home in Texas. He was born and raised in Odessa and played college football at the University of Texas.  According to ESPN.com, Williams stated, "I'm more happy to be a Dallas Cowboy than when I got my first bike."  The Cowboys, often called "America's Team, have one of the biggest fan bases in all of sports. A new fan favorite in Dallas can be very profitable for the franchise. Williams adds to the star status and wide receiver skill. Reebok and the NFL will also see a huge rise in jersey will many Cowboys fans wanting the jersey of their newest star. The trade is a great deal for the Cowboys business. The team becomes even more skilled with another big receiver and threat like Roy Williams.

NFL Moving to Europe?

NFL london logo.jpg

For the second year in a row the NFL is going across the pond to play in London.  Apparently there is a very large market for the NFL and there were a lot of increased sales as a result of last years games.

What about the good old USA? I don't know about you but some people feel that the NFL is abandoning us, first the NFL network and now this?  I know that it doesn't seem like much one game out of the year played in London but as soon as you know it there will be 2 games a year, then 3, and so on.  If there is such a big market for the NFL over there then what happened to NFL Europe?  I personally think that the NFL in London is as about a good as an idea as the MLB opening game being played in Japan.  It's not a good idea to me as a consumer.

$45 million for a football team, is it worth it?

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

image04.jpg

I think that I have seen it all.  I woke up this morning and realized that I needed an article for my 8AM class to write this blog about and came across this one.  Apparently the University of North Carolina wants to start a football team.  A football team that will cost the $45 million to start.  Most people would say "what is the problem?"   A-rod makes around $30million a year and there is a caviar covered pizza that only costs $1000 per a pie, but I think that this just sounds ridiculous.  $45million to start a college football team?  The University has only raised $25.3 million through athletic-related campaigns in the last 15 years, and now they want to raise $45 million in 5 years... something doesn't add up.  To raise this money some of the ideas that the university has come up with is raising students dues by $200.  Also apparently it costs $10 million a year just for the upkeep of the program.  Where would all of this money be going?

I think if the school is really serious that they can cut costs by signing a deal with the Carolina Panthers to use their stadium as their home field.  I just can't get past the fact that the projected cost is $45 million dollars.  I looked at the schools tuition on their website and the most that a student pays in tuition is $8702.25 per a semester as an student at the college of business as a non resident. http://studentaccounts.uncc.edu/TuitionAndFees.html .

Millen removed as Lions team president, CEO

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

matt millen.jpg             Over the past seven years Matt Millen has been the team president and CEO of the Detroit Lions. Throughout these years Millen has endured many dreadful seasons. In fact he has never had a winning season under him. He recorded a low of 31 wins over his seven year career. Talks from fans have publicly spoken about the firing of Millen for years. Finally their wishes were granted when owner Bill Ford relieved him from his duties today. Ford had invested a lot of time in Millen and decided to cut his losses and get rid of him once and for all. Ford had a lot of pressure put on him about this decision not only from his fans but also from his own son, Bill Ford Jr. After a 0-3 start for the Lions, Ford Jr. was fed up with their embarrassing performances. On Monday, Ford Jr. publicly announced his outrage with the job Millen was doing. He said he would fire Millen if he had the authority. This just added fuel to the fire and ultimately was a big deciding factor in this situation. "I am very disappointed with where we are as a team after our start this season," William Clay Ford added in his statement.
I believe this was the right move for the Lions. They are done with the Millen era and can move on. He has never significantly improved the team in anyway. He was given the team when they were decent and had potential. Now they are a mockery to the NFL and are not taken very seriously. Millen has also made many controversial draft picks where he did not come up on top. You would think with a team consistently bad they would get some good rookies in the draft, but not in this case. Ford wants to start fresh and begin to rebuild to a respectable franchise. I think this firing was long overdue but now that it's happened all Lions should be happy and optimistic for the seasons to come.

Most people who are around sports believe clutch performers are born, it is not something you can teach. Players like Michael Jordan, and Derrick Jeter have always been clutch and that separates them from average players. But do not tell this to the European soccer team AC Milan, and the Sydney Swans' football department. AC Milan has created what they call a "mind room," which is used to help players remain calm and perform in the clutch.

In a Mind Room, athletes are connected to biofeedback sensors that measure brain wave activity, muscle tension, sweat response, heart and breathing rates while watching a video of a bad performance like missing a crucial goal.

Zaichkowsky says the athlete always tenses up, their blood pressure goes up and breathing rate becomes irregular - as usually happens on the field when they choke in the clutch.

Biofeedback trains the athlete's mind to maintain a meditative state to reduce the chances of a brain explosion during a game.
