Can Lebron James be a 2 sport Athlete?

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
When you look at recievers in the NFL the average height is about 6'1 or 6'2 being guarded by 5'9 cornerbacks. What if there was a 6'9 260lb reciever that ran a 4.4 with a 48in vertical? Lebron James is the king of basketball today only by choice because he also was an all-state reciever in highschool and could have easily chose football at the next level. The cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini stated "The guy is gifted,  he's competitive and tough. I'm sure whatever he applied himself to, he'd probably be good in baseball or soccer or swimming." No defensive preperation could prepare you to cover a person with this type of body and athleticism it is truly impossible. He is as fast as the smaller recievers and as strong as the linebackers and safeties. In a jumpball scenerio it would be an automatic touchdown every time especially if an accurate quarterback can just lob it high in the air. James is still young and if he ever wins a championship in the NBA I would not be shocked if he attended a NFL training camp that summer.

Stratbridge Inc. Helps Link Data to Decisions

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

StratBridge Inc. has just developed ground breaking software that should undoubtedly help professional teams in every sport to make better managerial decisions. StratBridge Inc. is a company that has developed software for both ticket sales (StratTix), and player analysis (StratEdge). The company was founded in 1999 by Mr. Matthew Marolda and made a name for themselves in 2005 with their ticket selling software. StratTix can be used in a number of ways to help teams gain valuable information about their ticket sales, as well as the people buying them. This software can help the team view up-to-the-minute seating charts to see which seats are selling, and which ones are not. It will provide the teams with information about the people purchasing the tickets such as their geographical area, what source they used to purchase them (Ticket Master, Stubhub etc.), and helping to predict attendance. This will help lead to teams to finding the best time to market, when the best time is to promote, and will help their yield management strategies to become more effective. The company's newest software breakthrough, StratEdge, will ultimately give an "edge" to teams that are scouting and looking to draft, or sign specific players. It provides teams with detailed information about trades, contract extensions, and how they match up to other athletes at their position. This company is in a niche of its own, and one of the best at what they do. These new tools that are now readily available for any team will help them make smarter business decisions that everyone knows will ultimately affect their franchise for years to come. StratBridge Inc. already has more then 100 deals with professional teams in the NHL, MLB, NFL, MLS, AFL, and minor league baseball. They hope to continue to build bridges with and for various sport franchises around the world.

Mav's Owner Charged With Insider Trading

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Earlier today federal investigators charged Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban wiCuban Dancing.jpgth Insider Trading. Cuban tried to avoid a loss of $750,00 by allegedly using confidential information in a stock sale. The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) stated that in June of 2004, Cuban was offered into the coming stock of offering by Mamma.com INC even though he agreed to keep the information private. Cuban allegedly knew that the stock was being sold at a lower price than the market price, and a few hours later he told his broker to sell his entire share (600,000). By selling his stocks at the time he did he did not lose the $750,000. "The SEC is seeking a court judgment against Cuban finding that he violated the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws, an injunction against future violations, an unspecified civil penalty and restitution of the losses Cuban allegedly avoided". Cuban "is likely to commit such violations again in the future," as stated by the SEC unless he is subject to an injunction.

Naming Rights- Going on Ice?

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

It's no secret of the financial situation that has taken over the globe.  It's also probably no secret that this very situation that has ruined many jobs is also affecting the sports world.  One aspect of the sports business world that has truly started to suffer is the naming rights to various stadiums and future stadiums that have plans to be built.  With the economy in a mess it's difficult for many big name companies to take over the naming rights of the stadiums.  With some teams holding out on choosing a partner until after the economic crisis it's hard to say how this problem will be resolved.

In theory, waiting for the economic crisis to end truly isn't the best solution to this problem.  With no real end to this recession in sight, people may need to start thinking of a real solution instead of just waiting.  Stadiums are getting more and more expensive whenever they are built, so now it has come down to either finding a reliable partner for naming rights or taking on this burden yourself.  Whatever teams decide to choose, hopefully it will be the right one, but for now all the fans can do is sit back and watch as their teams fight through the economic crisis.  nfl_20logo_rgqe.gif

Sport Industry Attempts To Go Green

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

recycle.jpgFor the most part it is clear that our environment is going through some problems, especially with the burning of vast amounts of fossil fuels and the greenhouse gases which leak into our atmosphere. Recently stadiums and arenas across the country have realized that they themselves often times burn some much electricity and create a large amount of waste put into landfills. When a baseball stadium is lit up even for just six hours they use 6,420 kilowatt hours of electricity. What is very surprising is that is how much kilowatt hours it takes to power the average household in the United States for a year. Sport complexes do not have all the answers but they are making an attempt to start somewhere. They are using more bio friendly ink for their printers and are using more bio friendly chemicals to manicure their fields. But still there are many problems to be fixed, such as how many cars drive to just a single game. Of course these problems are far from being solved but at least stadiums and professional leagues are stepping up to attempt to fix problems they have put on our earth.

Baron Davis Creates Shoe and Clothing Line in China

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

96675.jpgBaron Davis, Los Angeles Clippers point guard recently signed a 5 year contract with apparel company Li-Ning in China, writes Sports Business Journal.  He plans on creating his own line of shoes and clothing to be sold initially to only the Chinese consumers.  Eventually the line could make it to the United States.  Li-Ning is trying to approach the American market slowly by using a star in American society like Baron Davis.  The 5 year deal Davis has with Li-Ning is supposedly the largest deal by a non-Chinese person with a Chinese company.  Davis has already filmed commercials to be showed in China.  In past years, Davis had endorsed Reebok, but that contract ended over the summer.  The new contract with Li-Ning should be a huge success in China.  Davis is not the only NBA player to sign with Chinese companies.  Stars such as Jason Kidd and Shaquille O'Neal have contracts of their own with companies like Peak and Li-Ning.  Who knows how many American athletes will soon be part of the Chinese Market.

The American market has been decreasing recently.  With better opportunities for endorsements in China, more American athletes are bound to go international.  Endorsements in China should create a much higher awareness of American athletes, resulting in a great increase in the American sports industry market.  Not only will international endorsements help, but lately American professional sports leagues have been traveling across the seas quite a bit.  International experience is a key towards future success.

Marbury Saga Continues

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Stephon Marbury, a New York guy, with a New York game, is being shunned out of his old city.  After a storied NBA career filled with drama Marbury is on the Knicks roster but will not be playing anytime soon. The Knicks new GM Donnie Walsh, and new head coach Mike D'Antoni agreed to keep Marbury on the team but to list him as unactive.  He will be getting paid 21.9 million dollars to ride the pine this year.  With young guards emerging and a chemistry brewing Marbury and the new coaching staff just have not got along.  Unless Chris Duhon, Nate Robinson or Jamal Crawford is injured, Marbury may not see the floor this year.  Lucky for him it is the last year of his contract and he is up for free agency at the end of the year.  In the past, Marbury has dealt with contract issues, coaching issues, and just can't seem to get along with anybody.  He threatened to take his game to Europe and turned down a contract at Minnesota, where he began his career because Kevin Garnett had a higher contract.  After Minnesota he arrived in Phoenix, then New Jersey where he did not produce, and then ended up in New York.  I wish Marbury luck in his basketball career, but he needs to grow up and learn to get along with the staff and become a good teammate.  Selfish ways will not help a team win, and until Marbury gets his act together, I don't know what team will take the 12 year veteran.

Economy May Not Hurt The NBA

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

nba.jpgWith the slowdown of the economy has caused many people to spend their money very wisely potentially putting little to no money towards tickets for sporting events. The NBA is very aware of this problem and are thinking of creative way to still attract fans to their games. In the past special incentives have only been given to valued season ticket holders but this season teams are offering special offers to all ticket sales. These offers include food vouchers, gas gift cards, free parking, and discounts on merchandise. Teams have also increased the amount of partial season ticket offers to give fans more options. Individual NBA teams are also coming up with other innovative ideas to keep their tickets sales at an average rate. For example the New Jersey Nets have started to use the buy now pay later method. Fans that use their credit card will be pre-approved but will not be charged until January 5th. Nets CEO Brett Yormark said now retail stores aren't the only ones that can offer this buy now pay later deal. Many other teams are also coming up with other ideas to keep fans coming to the games despite or weak economy.

Giving fans more options to spend their money will give the NBA more opportunities to keep up their ticket sales. Fans like when they have options to spend their money and are just not told how to use their own hard earned money. Hopefully these efforts by the NBA and individual teams will keep fans attending the games.

Can't Fill Father's Footsteps

| | Comments (2) | TrackBacks (0)

Patrick Ewing is arguably one of the greatest players to play for the New York Knicks. He leads the team in all time scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and steals for the Knickerbockers. Ewing is beloved by the fans and his legacy will live forever. However his son's future does not look very bright with his dad's former team. Ewing Jr. played in his final preseason game on Friday before being cut from the team's roster. Too much surprise he did not make the team despite his father's legacy. However with a less than average debut with the Knicks, they had to do what was best for the team. D'Antoni had said that the fact that Ewing's father is a Knicks legend could not be ignored, but it wouldn't factor into the decision.

Taking Ewing Jr. spot was shooting guard Anthony Roberson. They believe he will be more of a help for the team now and in the future. However although Ewing Jr. did not make the Knicks Squad, D'Antoni believes he has a legitimate shot to make it in the NBA with more hard work during the season. I am excited to see where the ex Hoya ends up in the near future and to see where he compares against his father's flawless resume.

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

kia_nba.gifWith the season finally here, the NBA has prepared promotoinal ideas to jump start the 2008-2009 season.  The NBA is teaming up with Kia to create a fan fest in New York City's Union Square.  The event will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, October 28th, which is opening day of the NBA season.  They plan to attract fans by bringing in former NBA stars and current New York Knick players, as well as having a full basketball court with entertainment.  This first time event should get the NBA going for a great season.  According to Sports Business Journal, Kia will promote Tip Off Week at all of it's 640 dealerships throughout the nation.  They will have NBA-branded Kia Borregos in all 30 NBA markets, where giveaways will also take place.  2008 will be Kia's first full year of partnership with the NBA.  The NBA will have several other Tip Off Week sponsors to continue traditions from previous seasons.  None, however will be as big as the Kia sponsorship.

The NBA deal with Kia is a great way to get fans involved this season, and will definitely increase the Kia sales.  The advertisement Kia is recieving through the NBA will be a nice bonus for their marketing department.  The NBA attracts many people, and if people see Kia working with the NBA, they are bound to think again before buying a Toyota.
